The Best Time To Blog Is When You Have Something Else To Do

I have a writing assignment to do about making a story outline based on an idea formed from a Grimm Brothers fairy tale. I took the first one I read and made up some arbitrary morality tale about an ex-military drug dealer in an attempt to flash in a neon sign that I’m trying to be deep and controversial with morally questionable acts.

I’m over the page limit, losing track of my plot progression, and losing faith in my characters. The characters are forced, the action’s predictable, and the message is heavy-handed.

Considering I might want to take the writing courses offered in my program in my upper years—and thank God I even have that option for my program; this might be what I have to expect from now on.

The one assignment basically this whole month I’ve been wanting to do has been buried by the other weekly quizzes or assignments that I could care less about, but should care more about because my professors and peers keep telling me its essential to know based on the fact that my program’s curriculum is so specific and centralized that there’s not much I can afford to miss to prepare me for next year.

Rather than continue writing this assignment, I’ve come here to complain. Because I’m good at that, and I need to feel like I’m good at something right now.

No, my program isn’t as intellectually stimulating as some others. No, my university as prestigious as yours, and frankly I don’t know if I can represent the ideal of ‘immediate employment’ that my program emphasizes for its undergrads to potential applicants.

But hell, it’s fun, you know? I get to press buttons, frame shots, be creative, make ideas, and work with my hands more than my head.

But right now, fuck it. Fuck it all.

Wood for a Writer

Get it?

imageimage

Found this on Lifehacker. Some really neat interior design. And all it does is make me really want to sit in that swivel chair and spin around. Plus that decked out shelf-wall where you could store a shit-ton of whatever the hell you want? Yes, please. Big-ass windows, bed right there, trees right outside—yeah, damn.

Oh yeah, and the wood. The wood is fucking everywhere. It’s awesome.

Great office space, I aspire to have one like this a couple decades down the road.

The interior designer is Jeremy Levine; he’s got a cool flash-based website with lots of draggy, droppy, and scrolly thingies, so you know he’s a legitimate designer.

Aurally Audacious Endeavours (Partly): A-1 + Nostalgia

A-1’s a rapper from San Fran, whose specific mixtape samples heavily from 90’s television themes, mainly cartoons. And the beats are dirty, the flow’s tight, the lyrics are pretty hilarious with the references to the themes he’s rapping over.

Anthony from Needle Drop did a review, he says it better than I could ever.

Nostalgic mind-fuck indeed.

This is totally not stealing someone else’s analysis to fill in my own. Totally.

IN OTHER NEWS, Let’s watch and listen to old some cartoon opening themes.

Starts at 0:07. Badass badassery.

Badass mummies.

Badass riffs.

My favourite. DAT SWAG.

Moving up to the coming-home-to-catch-awesomeness Era. Also, sick future rave party.

Fuck yeah.

Groovy.

I miss being a kid.

Oh, and I should probably put this in for good measure, you know' you’ll watch it anyways.

Well, fuck now I remember another one come to think of it.

C’mon, you know you watched it when it came out.

If you’re out there reading this, post some more in the comments. It’ll waste some good time.

Not Done Yet.

Think I was done posting? Nah, I do this shit in waves, bitches.

How much WANT can someone have?

This much want.

Got this off Cool Material, remember that site? I was going to post a hyperlink to the post I made that had something from Cool Material, but either I forgot when I posted it and what it was, or I am delusional. So, I’ll link to Cool Material itself.

This bag looks like it’s for hipsters, and it probably is.

But, fuck you, I want it anyway.

Scratch that, this shit is too good for hipsters.

Fuck hipsters. I want this bag.

Fucking hate hipsters.

Fuck.

I’m not actually that angry. I decided to overplay the whole ‘hipster-hate’ gag with this post because I literally have nothing better to say about the actual product I’m posting about other than that it looks cool, has a lot of compartments, looks sturdy and practical, and seems like it would be an eye-grabber if I walked around Toronto snapping sweet-ass pictures with the legit hypothetical dSLR that I would also have to store in that bag and all-around look like an amateur badass photographer and videographer.

Oh, well look at that.

Stand Back, We’re Going To Watch SCIENCE.

Deep.

Sagan + Thomas Newman score = thought-provoking mind candy.

My opinion? I don’t have one, I just take in with Carl Sagan says as truth, because he knows everything worth knowing about everything. Rest in peace, bro!

The Needle Drop

Reviews music, like me—even has my name.

Only he does it better, does it daily, and knows a lot more about music.

*sigh*

Been watching his reviews one after another for a good hour and a half now, and the artists that I do know of which he reviews, I’m getting that feeling that he’s hitting the head on the nail. There’s a constant ‘Damn, he’s right’ after each thorough, well-articulated, and sophisticated breakdown of the elements within the album he reviews each episode. Plus he’s funny and chill, like me—damn it.

Pretty titillating stuff. If you want to expand your musical horizons, and/or find out about some new albums being released/check out new artists, definitely check out this guy’s YouTube channel and his website, The Needle Drop.

Epic Trailer of the Week

Insane design for this trailer. Teases the story, the gameplay, the setting—what the hell doesn’t it do?

It doesn’t suck, for starters.

It starts off with a (un)dead girl, which is ballsy. You see zombie games now, you don’t see zombie children. But this trailer thrusts it in front of you and says ‘take it in, bitch, we’re not fucking around.’

And then it forms into a backwards narrative which kept me on my toes as the visuals pieced together what happened for me, all with that haunting piano melody to creep me out. Then the two survivors battling off fat zombies, skinny zombies, bikini zombies—shit, just a fuckload of zombies.

Cutting back to jarring scenes of the girl, alive again, running away—you start to get the feeling of what this game is supposed to be. Serious. Espiecally that added effect at the end.

From an artistic standpoint, HOLY SHIT.

The music, the slo-mo, the feeling and the characters—by God, if this isn’t quality zombie awesomeness, then you don’t know shit about zombies.

My body is ready.

Aurally Audacious Endeavours: Blue Sky Black Death

Ambient-ish, slightly haunting and all-around-pleasing sounds from a trip-hop group from Seattle. Blue Sky Black Death. Read on.

Not going to go into specifics of band history, because there’s Wikipedia for that, but I can tell you about their sound after listening to them a lot the past few months. And I can tell you that it’s really fucking awesome. Few reasons why: for one, it’s not what you’re probably used to listening to, and if you’ve found similar sounding artists to BSBD, chances are you already listen to BSBD, but I doubt you do because then you would undermine me and I don’t like that.

I’ve posted them before, so here’s the second chance to receive this experience.

The poignant vocals are provided by Yes Alexander, a folk artist who certainly takes full advantage of her unique voice, by creating creepily intimate and contemplating songs with her voice alone, and backed by the gentle and soft folk sounds, it really does create something else for your ears.

In terms of here though, BSBD compliments her unique vocality with melodic journeys through a very layered soundscape of muted, soothing trip-hop sounds. It’s a joy.

Yes Alexanders vocals are showcased in the album Slow Burning Lights, released in 2008. Prior to that, they have a shitload of other albums, and a few after. I’ve only listened to that and Late Night Cinema, both albums with similar soundscapes, and honestly I’m fine with that.

If you like chill, you’ll love these guys, if you like alternative hip-hop, or at least original and eccentric beats, then you’ll like these guys. If you like unique music you’ve probably never listened to, you’ll like these guys.

For car rides, train rides, thinking in chairs, doing work, watching the clouds, looking at stars, and any combination between. And a lot of other things, but that’s up to you to figure out.

Blue Sky Black Death—No, they’ll never be big, and I hope they don’t. There would be no glorifying sense of elitism if I couldn’t dig to find incredible artists like these guys.
